Maradona’s Death: Health Workers on Trial
Eight healthcare professionals are set to stand trial in Argentina over allegations of negligence leading to the death of football legend Diego Maradona in November 2020. Maradona, aged 60, passed away from heart failure after undergoing brain surgery earlier that month.
The accused, including Maradona’s personal doctor Leopoldo Luque and psychiatrist Agustina Cosachov, face charges of “simple homicide with wanton disregard” and could receive prison sentences ranging from eight to 25 years if convicted.
The trial, initially postponed, is now scheduled to commence on March 11, 2025. This legal proceeding follows an investigation that uncovered significant errors during Maradona’s home hospitalization, such as the administration of medications that may have induced arrhythmias.
Maradona’s family, particularly his daughter Dalma, have expressed their desire for justice, despite concerns about potential mafia threats. Dalma emphasized the importance of uncovering the truth surrounding her father’s death.
