Nnamdi Kanu's Case Transferred to New Jurist

New Judge Assigned to Nnamdi Kanu’s Legal Proceedings

The Chief Judge of the Federal High Court in Abuja, Justice John Tsoho, has reassigned the case of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), to a new judge.

This decision follows a series of events that began in September 2024, when Kanu requested that Justice Binta Nyako recuse herself from his trial, citing concerns of bias. Although Justice Nyako initially stepped down, the case was subsequently returned to her by the Chief Judge, leading to further objections from Kanu and his legal team.

On February 10, 2025, during a court hearing, Kanu expressed frustration over Justice Nyako’s continued involvement in his case despite her earlier recusal. He accused her of maintaining her position due to ongoing corruption cases against her husband and son.

In response to these developments, Kanu’s legal team sought administrative intervention from higher judicial authorities. On March 7, 2025, they received official letters from both the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, and the Chief Judge of the Federal High Court, John Tsoho, confirming the reassignment of Kanu’s case to a different judge.

Kanu’s counsel, Aloy Ejimakor, conveyed his client’s gratitude for the prompt administrative actions taken, emphasizing Kanu’s readiness to face trial and his confidence in his innocence.
