Hairstylist Charged After Altercation with Teen Client

Dispute Over Bill Leads to Assault Charge for Stylist

An 18-year-old Maryland hairstylist, Jayla Cunningham, has been charged with second-degree assault following a viral incident involving a 15-year-old client. The altercation arose over a disputed $150 payment for a weave installation. Cunningham alleges that the teenager attempted to leave without settling the bill, prompting her to intervene by dragging the client back into the salon by her hoodie and subsequently removing the installed weave.

The client’s mother contends that her daughter mistakenly sent the payment to an incorrect CashApp account and was in the process of resolving the issue when the confrontation occurred. She describes her daughter as being traumatized by the event. The family has since retained legal representation, with their attorney, De’Aja Thompson, criticizing Cunningham’s actions as an inappropriate form of vigilante justice.

Cunningham is scheduled to appear in court on April 18. If convicted of second-degree assault, she could face up to ten years in prison and a $2,500 fine.

The incident has garnered significant attention on social media, with the original video amassing over 54 million views. Cunningham reports receiving death threats and has expressed concern for her safety in the aftermath.
