Fubara Faces Pressure: Resign or Face Impeachment
The political landscape in Rivers State has become increasingly volatile, with the All Progressives Congress (APC) issuing a 48-hour ultimatum to Governor Siminalayi Fubara, demanding his resignation or facing impeachment proceedings. Tony Okocha, the APC Chairman in Rivers State, announced this ultimatum during a press briefing in Port Harcourt on March 10, 2025, accusing Governor Fubara of mismanaging state affairs and disrespecting President Bola Tinubu.
This development follows a series of escalating tensions between the governor and the Rivers State House of Assembly. The Assembly, dominated by lawmakers loyal to former Governor Nyesom Wike, had previously issued a 48-hour ultimatum to Governor Fubara to present the 2025 budget. In response, Governor Fubara invited the 27 pro-Wike lawmakers to a reconciliation meeting at the Government House. However, the legislators rejected the invitation, criticizing the manner in which it was extended and insisting that proper channels be used for such communications.
The Supreme Court’s recent judgment, which was expected to resolve the prolonged political crisis in Rivers State, has instead intensified the turmoil, with both factions interpreting the ruling to their advantage. The Assembly has also summoned the Chairman of the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) to account for the 2024 local government elections and disclose details of the funds expended without appropriation.
In light of these events, the APC’s ultimatum adds pressure on Governor Fubara, who now faces potential impeachment if he does not resign within the stipulated 48-hour period. The situation remains fluid, with stakeholders and observers keenly watching how the governor will respond to these mounting challenges.
