Oil Firms Owe FG N2 Trillion, Say Reps

N2 Trillion Debt: Oil Companies and FG’s Financial Strain

The House of Representatives has revealed that 48 oil firms owe the Federal Government approximately N2 trillion in unpaid royalties and taxes. In response, seven major oil and gas operators have agreed to remit a total of $37.4 million (about N58 billion) to the Federation Account before August 2025.

The House’s Public Accounts Committee uncovered significant lapses in royalty payments and reconciliation processes within the sector after scrutinizing financial records from the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC).

Additionally, the House issued a 72-hour ultimatum to the CEOs of eight oil companies to appear before its Committee on Public Accounts regarding the $506.565 million allegedly owed to the Federation.

These developments highlight the need for improved financial accountability and transparency in Nigeria’s oil and gas sector.
