Maradona’s Death: Medical Team Faces 25-Year Sentences

The trial of seven medical professionals accused of criminal negligence in the death of Argentine football legend Diego Maradona commenced today in Buenos Aires. The defendants include neurosurgeon Leopoldo Luque, psychiatrist Agustina Cosachov, and four nurses. They face charges of “simple homicide with malice aforethought,” carrying potential prison sentences ranging from eight to 25 years if convicted.

Maradona, widely regarded as one of the greatest footballers, passed away at the age of 60 in November 2020 from a heart attack while recovering from brain surgery. Prosecutors allege that the medical team failed to provide adequate care during his recovery, leading to his untimely death.

The trial is anticipated to be lengthy, with over 100 witnesses, including medical staff and Maradona’s family members, expected to testify. The proceedings have elicited strong emotional reactions nationwide, reflecting Maradona’s status as a cherished national icon.
