Justice Served: Life Sentence for Ekiti Monarch’s Kidnapper

On March 10, 2025, an Ekiti State High Court in Ado Ekiti sentenced 25-year-old Gabriel Emmanuel to life imprisonment for kidnapping and an additional three years for extortion.

Case Details:

  • Kidnapping Incident: On June 24, 2020, at Eda-Ile Ekiti, Gabriel Emmanuel and accomplices abducted Oba Adeniran Omotayo, the Eleda of Eda-Ile Ekiti.
  • Extortion Attempt: On November 20, 2021, Emmanuel and others demanded ₦4 million from Barrister Joseph Olorunfemi with menacing intent.

Legal Proceedings:

  • Charges: Emmanuel faced charges of murder, kidnapping, and demanding property with menace.
  • Verdict: He was acquitted of the murder charge but found guilty of kidnapping and extortion.
  • Sentencing: Justice Adekunle Adeleye sentenced Emmanuel to life imprisonment for kidnapping and three years for extortion.

Victim’s Testimony:

Oba Omotayo recounted that armed men abducted him from his settlement, held him for four days, and released him after a ₦1.28 million ransom was paid.
