Reps Demand Action Against Pornographic Websites in Nigeria
The Nigerian House of Representatives has directed the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) to ensure that all internet service providers (ISPs) in the country immediately block access to websites hosting obscene and pornographic content. This resolution, passed during a plenary session on March 11, 2025, aims to uphold societal values and address concerns about the negative impact of such content, particularly on the youth.
The motion was introduced by Rep. Dalhatu Tafoki from Katsina State, who highlighted the detrimental effects of unrestricted access to pornographic materials, including the promotion of adultery, prostitution, and addiction. He referenced similar measures implemented in various countries across Asia, Africa, and the Middle East.
In addition to blocking access, the House has mandated the NCC to enforce existing laws, such as the Nigerian Communications Act and the National Information Technology Development Act, to sanction ISPs that fail to comply with the directive.
This legislative action has sparked discussions among Nigerians, with some supporting the move as a necessary step to protect societal morals, while others view it as a potential overreach into personal freedoms.
