AIG Announces Expungement of Law Affecting Pregnant Officers

Unmarried Pregnant Policewomen No Longer Face Dismissal

Assistant Inspector-General of Police (AIG) Aishatu Baju has announced that the Nigeria Police Force has officially abolished regulations that mandated the dismissal of unmarried female officers who became pregnant while in service.

This change aligns with ongoing police reforms and the provisions of the Police Act of 2020. Baju emphasized that all gender-discriminatory provisions have been expunged to promote inclusivity and equal opportunities within the force.

The policy change follows the controversial dismissal of Corporal Omolola Olajide in 2021 after she became pregnant while serving in Ekiti State. Her case sparked nationwide debate, leading the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) to challenge the constitutionality of the regulation in court.

Although a Federal High Court in Abuja dismissed the suit, the NBA pursued an appeal. In May 2024, the Court of Appeal in Lagos struck down Sections 126 and 127 of the Nigeria Police Act, ruling that they were discriminatory and unconstitutional.
