Former NFF President Pinnick Ousted from FIFA Council
Amaju Pinnick, former President of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), narrowly lost his bid for re-election to the FIFA Council by a single vote during the 14th CAF Extraordinary General Assembly held on March 12, 2025, in Cairo, Egypt. Pinnick secured 28 votes, just one short of the 29 votes obtained by both Ahmed Yahya of Mauritania and Souleiman Hassan Waberi of Djibouti, who clinched the final available seats on the council.
The election results for the African representatives on the FIFA Council were as follows:
- Fouzi Lekjaa (Morocco): 49 votes
- Hany Abou Rida (Egypt): 35 votes
- Djibrilla Hima Hamidou (Niger Republic): 35 votes
- Ahmed Yahya (Mauritania): 29 votes
- Souleiman Hassan Waberi (Djibouti): 29 votes
Pinnick’s term on the FIFA Council began in 2021, and this narrow defeat marks the end of his tenure.
In the women’s category, Kanizat Ibrahim from Comoros secured the seat with 30 votes, surpassing Lydia Nsekera, who received 13 votes, and Isha Johansen, who garnered 7 votes.
These elections have reshaped African representation within FIFA, with new members set to influence the direction of football on both the continent and the global stage.
