Legal Perspective on Fubara’s Impeachment by Wike
Nyesom Wike, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister and former Governor of Rivers State, has stated that impeaching Governor Siminalayi Fubara is not a criminal act. During a media chat, Wike emphasized that if the Rivers State House of Assembly deems impeachment necessary due to constitutional violations, it should proceed, as such actions are constitutionally sanctioned.
He dismissed concerns that impeachment would lead to lawlessness, asserting, “I have heard people say, ‘Oh, if they impeach him, there will be a breakdown of law and order.’ Rubbish! Nothing will happen.”
Wike also criticized attempts by a minority of legislators to pass laws unilaterally, questioning their legitimacy and adherence to democratic principles. He remarked on the absurdity of a few members enacting laws and seeking judicial validation, highlighting the importance of inclusivity and proper legislative processes.
Furthermore, Wike addressed threats of unrest should Fubara be impeached, challenging the notion that certain ethnic groups hold exclusive rights to militant actions. He questioned the basis of such claims, stating, “Who is born as a militant? You say you’re a militant. Who is not a militant? Who cannot blow the pipeline?”
