Distortion of Facts: Akpabio’s Response to Natasha at UN
Senate President Godswill Akpabio has accused Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan of distorting facts and attempting to embarrass Nigeria on the international stage.
This accusation follows Akpoti-Uduaghan’s recent address at the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) meeting at the United Nations in New York, where she alleged that her six-month suspension from the Nigerian Senate was a consequence of her sexual harassment claims against Akpabio.
Akpabio expressed concern that Akpoti-Uduaghan’s actions might discourage the appointment of women to key political positions, stating, “She has now externalized the matter, attempting to embarrass Nigeria before the international community by presenting a false narrative at the IPU UN event.”
In response to Akpoti-Uduaghan’s claims at the IPU, House of Representatives member Kafilat Ogbara presented the Senate’s perspective, clarifying that the narrative shared internationally differed from the actual events.
Akpoti-Uduaghan’s suspension has sparked debates about gender dynamics in Nigerian politics and the appropriate channels for addressing allegations against high-ranking officials. Civil society groups have called for transparency and fairness in investigating such matters.
