Female Climber Faces Persecution for Hijab-Free Competition
Elnaz Rekabi, an esteemed Iranian competition climber, gained international attention in October 2022 when she competed in the IFSC Climbing Asian Championships in Seoul without wearing the mandatory hijab. This occurred amid widespread protests in Iran advocating for women’s rights and against compulsory hijab laws.
Upon her return to Tehran, Rekabi faced significant repercussions, including alleged house arrest and pressure to make a forced confession. There were also reports of her family’s property being demolished.
In November 2024, another Iranian woman sparked controversy by stripping to her underwear in protest against strict hijab enforcement at Tehran’s Azad University. This act led to her arrest, during which she reportedly suffered severe injuries and was subsequently hospitalized. Her protest highlighted the ongoing resistance against Iran’s mandatory hijab laws.
