Akpabio Receives Senate’s Vote of Confidence
On March 13, 2025, the Nigerian Senate passed a unanimous vote of confidence in Senate President Godswill Akpabio amid sexual harassment allegations made by Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan. The motion was introduced by Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele and seconded by Deputy Minority Leader Olalere Oyewumi. Senators urged Nigerians to focus on the National Assembly’s legislative duties and not be distracted by the ongoing allegations.
Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan had accused Akpabio of sexual harassment and was subsequently suspended from the Senate. She reported the incident to the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), alleging that her suspension was politically motivated and aimed at silencing her.
In response to the Senate’s vote, Akpabio expressed gratitude for the support, stating that he learned about the resolution through the radio. He criticized Akpoti-Uduaghan for allegedly spreading falsehoods about the Senate’s actions.
The situation has sparked reactions from various quarters, with some expressing concern over the Senate’s handling of the allegations. Former PDP spokesperson Kola Ologbodiyan described the vote of confidence as “worrisome.”
