Senate Addresses Natasha’s Suspension: Not Harassment Claims
The Nigerian Senate has clarified that Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan’s six-month suspension was due to gross misconduct and not her sexual harassment allegations against Senate President Godswill Akpabio.
Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele emphasized that her suspension resulted from persistent acts of misconduct and violations of Senate rules, including refusing to sit in her assigned seat, speaking without recognition, engaging in disruptive behavior, making disrespectful remarks against Senate leadership, and defying the Senate Committee on Ethics and Privileges.
Bamidele also noted that Akpoti-Uduaghan’s sexual harassment petition was dismissed due to procedural issues, as it did not meet the established requirements for submission.
This clarification was communicated to the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) after Akpoti-Uduaghan claimed at a United Nations event that her suspension was linked to her allegations against Akpabio. The Senate’s response aimed to correct these assertions and reaffirm that the disciplinary action was based solely on her conduct within the legislative chamber.
