95 Days Lost at Sea: Fisherman’s Survival Secrets Revealed
Peruvian fisherman Máximo Napa Castro, 61, was rescued after surviving 95 days adrift in the Pacific Ocean. He departed from Marcona, Peru, on December 7, 2024, for a routine fishing trip with provisions for two weeks. However, a storm diverted his boat off course, leaving him stranded at sea.
To survive, Napa Castro collected rainwater and sustained himself by consuming birds, insects, and turtles. He was discovered by an Ecuadorian fishing patrol vessel approximately 680 miles off the coast on March 11, 2025, in a severely dehydrated and critical condition.
Reflecting on his ordeal, Napa Castro credited thoughts of his family, particularly his mother and granddaughter, for motivating him to persevere. His family, though concerned, maintained hope during his absence.
After receiving medical treatment at Hospital Nuestra Señora de las Mercedes in Paita, he was discharged on March 15 and reunited with his family.
