Nursery School Pays Mum After Baby’s Skull Fracture
Kiera Young, a 26-year-old mother from Glasgow, has been awarded a five-figure sum in damages after her seven-month-old daughter, Lexie Hurles, suffered a fractured skull and brain injury during a fall at Primrose City Nursery, where Kiera had worked for nearly two years.
On March 24, 2023, during Lexie’s third settling-in session at the nursery, staff reported that she had merely “bumped” her head. However, Kiera noticed a jelly-like lump on Lexie’s skull and rushed her to the Royal Hospital for Children, where she was treated for a skull fracture and brain bleed.
The Care Inspectorate identified several failings at the nursery, including inadequate safety precautions, failure to inform Kiera and her partner about the injury, and absence of an accident report. Kiera pursued legal action, leading to an out-of-court settlement. She expressed that while Lexie has recovered, the incident left her traumatized, initially distrusting even family members with Lexie’s care.
A spokesperson for Digby Brown Solicitors emphasized the importance of adhering to safety procedures in childcare settings to prevent such incidents.
