Ghana President's X Account Hacked: Crypto Scam Alert

Hacked: Ghana President’s X Account Promotes Crypto Fraud

Ghana’s President, John Dramani Mahama, recently faced a security breach on his official X (formerly Twitter) account, which was compromised for approximately 48 hours by cryptocurrency scammers. During this period, the hackers promoted a fraudulent project named “Solanafrica,” falsely claiming it was an initiative led by President Mahama to facilitate free payments across Africa using the Solana blockchain.

The breach began on Saturday, with suspicious posts appearing by Sunday, endorsing the fake “Solanafrica” scheme and encouraging followers to invest. Despite swift deletion of these posts by Mahama’s team, the account continued to share crypto-related content, including teasers about launching a new memecoin.

President Mahama’s team collaborated with X’s support to regain control of the account. In a statement, Mahama confirmed the restoration, thanking supporters for their concern.

Ghana’s Cyber Security Authority (CSA) is investigating the incident, working with X and other stakeholders to prevent future occurrences.

This incident highlights a growing trend of high-profile social media account hacks in Africa used to promote cryptocurrency scams. Similar breaches have targeted South African opposition leader Julius Malema and Nigerian businessman Tony Elumelu, emphasizing the need for enhanced cybersecurity measures among public figures.

Cybersecurity experts recommend that prominent individuals adopt stronger security protocols, including monitoring login activities, limiting third-party app access, and maintaining dedicated teams for continuous account surveillance.

The public is advised to exercise caution and verify the authenticity of online investment opportunities, especially those promoted through compromised accounts.
