Introducing Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ekwe Ibas of Rivers State

Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ekwe Ibas, born on September 27, 1960, in Nko, Cross River State, Nigeria, is a distinguished naval officer and diplomat with a career spanning over four decades. He was appointed as the administrator of Rivers State following the declaration of a state of emergency by President Bola Tinubu.

Educational Background

Ibas commenced his primary education at Nko Primary School and completed it at Big Qua Primary School, Calabar, in 1971. He attended Hope Waddell Training Institute, Calabar, from 1972 to 1976, and the School of Basic Studies, Ogoja, between 1977 and 1979. He enlisted in the Nigerian Defence Academy as part of the 26 Regular Course on June 20, 1979, and was commissioned as a sub-lieutenant on January 1, 1983. Throughout his career, Ibas attended various military courses, including the Sub-Lieutenant Technical Course in India, Primary Pilot Training at the Nigerian Air Force Base in Kaduna, the Junior Staff Course at the Armed Forces Command and Staff College, Jaji, and the National Defence Course at the National Defence College, Islamabad, Pakistan. He also holds a master’s degree in defence and strategic studies from Quaid-i-Azam University, Islamabad.

Military Career

Throughout his illustrious career, Ibas held several key positions in the Nigerian Navy, including:​

  • Commanding Officer: Underwater Warfare School, Forward Operating Base Ibaka, and Naval Air Base, Ojo.​
  • Staff Appointments: Naval Provost Marshal, Principal Staff Officer to the Chief of Naval Staff, Command Operations Officer at Western Naval Command, Chief of Administration at Naval Headquarters, and Navy Secretary.​
  • Flag Officer Commanding: Western Naval Command.​
  • Chief of Logistics: Nigerian Navy.​

In recognition of his service, Ibas received numerous awards, including the Silver Jubilee Medal, ECOMOG Medal, Forces Service Star, Meritorious Service Star, Distinguished Service Star, and the General Service Star. He was also conferred with the Nigerian National Honour of Commander of the Order of the Federal Republic (CFR) in October 2022 by President Muhammadu Buhari.

Personal Life

Ibas is married to Theresa Ibas, and they have three children. His hobbies include reading, watching documentaries, and playing golf.

As the newly appointed administrator of Rivers State, Vice Admiral Ibas brings a wealth of experience in leadership and strategic operations, which is expected to contribute positively to addressing the current challenges in the state.
