Imane Khelif Unfazed by Trump Ahead of LA Olympics

Imane Khelif: No Intimidation from Trump Before LA Olympics

Algerian boxer Imane Khelif has declared her intention to defend her Olympic title at the 2028 Los Angeles Games, stating she is “not intimidated” by U.S. President Donald Trump’s recent policies. In February 2025, President Trump signed an executive order banning transgender women from participating in women’s sports, a move that has drawn both support and criticism.

Khelif, who secured a gold medal at the Paris 2024 Olympics amid a gender eligibility controversy, clarified that she is not transgender. She emphasized her determination to compete, saying, “I am not intimidated by President Trump’s statements or policies. I will be in Los Angeles to defend my title.”

The controversy surrounding Khelif began when she was disqualified from the 2023 World Championships due to elevated testosterone levels. However, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) later cleared her to compete in Paris after the International Boxing Association lost its Olympic recognition.

IOC President Thomas Bach attributed the gender controversy at the Paris Games to a Russian disinformation campaign, stating that it was “grounded in misinformation spread by Russia and had no basis in reality.”

Despite facing public scrutiny and online abuse, Khelif remains focused on her boxing career. She has filed formal complaints regarding the harassment and continues to train with the goal of achieving a second Olympic gold in Los Angeles.

The IOC’s executive board has recommended boxing’s inclusion in the 2028 Games, pending final approval. This decision further motivates Khelif, who expressed hope for continued IOC leadership that upholds fairness and sportsmanship.
