INEC Urged to Restore Kogi and Delta Constituencies

Kogi and Delta: Call for Restoration of Suppressed Seats

On March 19, 2025, the Nigerian House of Representatives called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to restore 13 suppressed state constituencies in Kogi and Delta States.

Kogi State:

The House noted that Kogi State, which has nine federal constituencies, is constitutionally entitled to between 27 and 36 State Assembly seats. However, the state currently has only 25 seats, falling short of this requirement. Historically, during the 1991 gubernatorial and state assembly elections, Kogi had 32 constituencies. A review in 1998 led to the suppression of 12 constituencies, reducing the number to 25. The House identified the affected constituencies as:

  • Kabba-Bunu II
  • Ijumu II
  • Koton Karfe I
  • Yagba West II
  • Adavi II
  • Iffe/Ogodu
  • Igala Ogba
  • Okura
  • Enjema
  • Dekina Townr
  • Olamaboro II
  • Bassa-Nge/Gbirra

Delta State:

In Delta State, the House specifically called for the restoration of the Sapele II State Assembly Constituency. This action aligns with a Federal High Court judgment and constitutional provisions.

Next Steps:

The House mandated its Committee on Electoral Matters to engage with INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, to ensure compliance and report back within four weeks.

Restoring these constituencies aims to enhance equitable representation and deepen democratic processes in the affected states.
