Peter Obi's Appeal Against Rivers State of Emergency

National Assembly Urged to Reject Rivers Emergency

Peter Obi, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party and former governor of Anambra State, has condemned President Bola Tinubu’s declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State and the subsequent suspension of Governor Siminalayi Fubara. Obi described the move as “reckless” and “unconstitutional,” asserting that it undermines democratic principles and could lead Nigeria back to a state of lawlessness.

In his statement, Obi emphasized that a state of emergency does not grant the President the authority to unilaterally remove an elected governor, labeling such an action as a violation of democratic norms and good governance. He expressed concern that this approach could set a dangerous precedent, eroding the rule of law and democratic values in the country.

Obi called on the National Assembly and other stakeholders to intervene and prevent the enforcement of the President’s proclamation, urging them to uphold the constitution and protect Nigeria’s democracy.
