Rivers Assembly Supports Emergency Rule and Administrator

Emergency Rule Backed by Rivers Assembly Leadership

The Rivers State House of Assembly has expressed support for President Bola Tinubu’s recent declaration of a state of emergency in the state, which resulted in the suspension of Governor Siminalayi Fubara, his deputy, and all state legislators for an initial period of six months.

In an official statement, the Assembly attributed the political crisis to Governor Fubara’s “despotic and tyrannical actions,” which they claim have unconstitutionally hindered the legislative body’s functions.

The Assembly’s Speaker emphasized that the President’s intervention serves the nation’s best interests and called on residents to remain calm as the appointed sole administrator assumes responsibility.

The Assembly has pledged full support to the sole administrator, assuring constituents of their commitment to restoring stability and effective governance in Rivers State.

This development follows escalating tensions between Governor Fubara and state lawmakers, leading to an impeachment process against him over alleged illegalities concerning budget presentations and legislative composition. Additionally, recent incidents of pipeline vandalism, including a fire on the Trans Niger Pipeline, have contributed to the federal government’s decision to impose emergency rule in the state.

The Nigerian Bar Association has criticized the suspension of elected officials as illegal, asserting that a declaration of emergency does not automatically dissolve or suspend elected state governments.
