Amaechi Urges Tinubu: Fubara’s Suspension is Unjust
Former Rivers State Governor and ex-Minister of Transportation, Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, has strongly condemned President Bola Tinubu’s recent declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State, which led to the suspension of Governor Siminalayi Fubara, his deputy, and members of the State House of Assembly.
Amaechi described the President’s actions as “undemocratic, unconstitutional, and a brazen violation of Nigeria’s Constitution.”
In a statement issued on Wednesday, March 19, 2025, Amaechi emphasized that the Nigerian Constitution outlines a specific process for the removal of a state governor, as detailed in Section 188, which does not grant the President authority to unilaterally suspend elected state officials.
He argued that President Tinubu’s actions effectively “suspended and truncated democracy in Rivers State,” constituting an unlawful power grab.
Amaechi called on the National Assembly, state governors, and other stakeholders to oppose this “audacious violation” of the Constitution and to ensure that such “illegality” does not stand. He commended governors who have spoken out against the suspension and urged all people of goodwill to rise in defense of democratic principles.
