NHS Dessert Supply: Three Fatalities from Food Poisoning

A listeria outbreak linked to desserts supplied to NHS hospitals has resulted in three deaths and two hospitalizations. The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) and Food Standards Agency (FSA) are investigating five cases of listeria monocytogenes infections identified between May and December 2024, involving patients aged 68 to 89 with underlying health conditions.

The outbreak is suspected to originate from mousses and ice creams produced by Cool Delight Desserts. As a precaution, the FSA has recalled all chilled desserts supplied by the company to the NHS and care homes. Hospital staff have been advised to remove these products from ward fridges.

Listeriosis, caused by the bacterium listeria monocytogenes, can lead to severe illness, particularly in vulnerable populations such as older adults, pregnant women, and individuals with weakened immune systems. Symptoms include high temperature, muscle aches, chills, and nausea.
