House Spokesperson: Tinubu’s Consultation on Rivers Emergency
President Bola Tinubu’s declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State has been confirmed to have followed due constitutional processes, including consultation with the National Assembly. House of Representatives spokesperson, Hon. Akin Rotimi, stated that prior to the declaration, President Tinubu engaged in discussions with key legislative leaders and security officials.
This consultation involved Senate President Godswill Akpabio, House Speaker Abbas Tajudeen, Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu, Senate Leader Michael Opeyemi Bamidele, and House Leader Prof. Julius Ihonvbere, alongside National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu.
During these meetings, the President briefed attendees on his intentions regarding the state of emergency, addressing escalating political turmoil and security breaches in Rivers State. The leadership present expressed unanimous support for the decision.
In compliance with Section 305 of the 1999 Constitution, President Tinubu has formally communicated his decision to the House of Representatives, seeking the necessary legislative approval. This communication is scheduled for reading during the plenary session on Wednesday, March 19, 2025, where further legislative actions will be deliberated.
