AGF: Wike Exonerated from Blame in Rivers Emergency Rule
Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF) and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi, SAN, has defended President Bola Tinubu’s declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State, asserting that the action was necessary to prevent a total collapse of governance in the state. Fagbemi emphasized that the President acted at the appropriate time to address the escalating political crisis.
Regarding the role of Nyesom Wike, the former governor of Rivers State and current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Fagbemi clarified that Wike was not implicated in the events leading to the emergency declaration. He stated that Wike played no role in the political crisis that precipitated the state’s emergency status.
However, some groups, such as the Pan Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF), have criticized Wike’s involvement in the crisis. PANDEF accused Wike of obstructing peace efforts, noting that while Governor Fubara engaged with mediators, Wike allegedly rebuffed attempts at dialogue.
Additionally, the Civil Society Legislative Advocacy Centre (CISLAC) accused President Tinubu of political bias, alleging that his actions have allowed Wike to exert undue influence over Rivers State’s governance, fostering political godfatherism and weakening democratic institutions.
