Oyo Government Dismisses Charges in Stampede Case
The Oyo State Government has officially withdrawn all charges against Naomi Silekunola, the former wife of the Ooni of Ife; Oriyomi Hamzat, owner of Agidigbo FM; and Abdullahi Fasasi, principal of Islamic High School, Bashorun, Ibadan.
These individuals were previously implicated in connection with a tragic stampede at a children’s funfair in December 2024, which resulted in the loss of at least 35 lives.
The incident occurred during a Christmas funfair at Islamic High School, Orita Basorun, Ibadan, leading to charges of murder and manslaughter against the trio. In January 2025, they were granted bail set at ₦10 million each.
On March 20, 2025, the Oyo State Attorney General, Abiodun Aikomo, announced the dismissal of all charges, citing the defendants’ empathy and the interest of justice as reasons for the decision. Following the court’s announcement, the defendants were visibly relieved, exchanging smiles and pleasantries as they walked free.
