Senate Imposes Six-Month Suspension on Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan

Six-Month Suspension: Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan’s Brave Stand

Nigerian Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan recently spoke to Sky News about her six-month suspension from the Senate following her sexual harassment allegations against Senate President Godswill Akpabio. In the interview, she stated, “I found the courage to speak up,” referring to her decision to address the alleged misconduct.

Akpoti-Uduaghan claimed that Akpabio had implied she needed to “please him” to fully enjoy her privileges as a senator. She described her suspension as a calculated attempt to silence her, asserting that it was an assault on democracy.

The Senate’s ethics committee recommended her suspension, citing violations such as refusing to sit in her assigned seat, speaking without recognition, and making abusive remarks about the Senate leadership. However, women’s rights groups and activists have condemned the suspension, viewing it as a punitive response to her allegations and a reflection of the challenges women face in Nigerian politics.

Akpoti-Uduaghan’s actions have sparked conversations about sexual harassment and gender inequality in Nigeria’s political sphere. She has filed a lawsuit against Akpabio, seeking 100 billion naira in damages.
