White House Confirms Trump’s Plan to Close Education Dept.
President Donald Trump is set to sign an executive order today to initiate the dismantling of the U.S. Department of Education, fulfilling a campaign promise to return educational authority to the states. The order directs Education Secretary Linda McMahon to take necessary steps to facilitate the department’s closure while ensuring the continuation of essential educational services.
This move has sparked significant opposition. Democratic state attorneys general have filed a lawsuit to prevent the department’s dissolution and the associated layoffs, arguing that such actions could harm public education standards and disrupt funding for schools and students. Additionally, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) has condemned the order as unconstitutional.
It’s important to note that shutting down a federal department requires congressional approval, including bipartisan support in the Senate, making the future of this executive order uncertain. As of the 2024 fiscal year, the Department of Education had a $268 billion budget and more than 4,000 staff, overseeing numerous educational programs nationwide.
