Boston Celtics: America’s Most Expensive Sports Deal
The Boston Celtics, one of the NBA’s most storied franchises, are set to be sold for a record-breaking $6.1 billion to a group led by private equity investor Bill Chisholm. This transaction surpasses the previous record of $6.05 billion paid for the NFL’s Washington Commanders in 2023.
Chisholm, a Massachusetts native and lifelong Celtics fan, co-founded Symphony Technology Group (STG) in 2002 and serves as its managing partner and chief investment officer. STG specializes in enterprise software and technology investments, managing over $10 billion in assets as of 2023.
The current ownership group, Boston Basketball Partners, acquired the Celtics in 2002 for $360 million. Under their stewardship, the team secured an NBA championship in 2008. The sale agreement allows Wyc Grousbeck, the current governor, to maintain his role overseeing team operations until the 2027-2028 season.
This landmark deal underscores the escalating valuations of NBA franchises and reflects the league’s robust financial health, bolstered by substantial media rights agreements and global popularity. The transaction is pending approval from the NBA Board of Governors.
