Makinde: Upholding Democracy Against Emergency Rule
Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has condemned President Bola Tinubu’s recent declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State, labeling the action as unconstitutional and a threat to Nigeria’s democratic principles.
In his biweekly newsletter, “The Business of Governance Issue 110,” Governor Makinde emphasized the importance of upholding democratic values, stating, “Our democratic tenets must never be trifled with, no matter our personal feelings and loyalties. This is the time to take a stand for fairness, equity, and justice.”
He further expressed concern over the suspension of the executive and legislative arms of Rivers State’s government, asserting that such actions are illegal and should be opposed by all well-meaning Nigerians.
Governor Makinde also highlighted the collective stance of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Governors’ Forum, which has resolved to challenge the President’s actions in court to safeguard the nation’s democracy.
