In Court: Naira Marley’s Stand on Alleged Threats and Assault Against Mohbad
Naira Marley, a prominent Nigerian musician and head of Marlian Records, has been at the center of controversy following allegations of assault and threats against his former signee, Ilerioluwa Aloba, popularly known as Mohbad. In October 2022, Mohbad publicly accused Naira Marley and associates of assaulting him, sharing images and videos displaying injuries that required hospitalization. Naira Marley refuted these claims, suggesting that Mohbad might have been under the influence during the incident and referred to the situation as a “family affair.”
Following Mohbad’s untimely death in September 2023, videos resurfaced alleging bullying and assault by Naira Marley and music promoter Sam Larry. The Lagos State Police Commissioner, Idowu Owohunwa, stated that evidence linked both individuals to cyberbullying, physical abuse, threats to life, and assault against Mohbad. However, both Naira Marley and Sam Larry denied any involvement in Mohbad’s death, providing alibis that they were out of the country during the time of his passing
In a significant legal development, a court recently struck out charges against Naira Marley, Sam Larry, and others related to these allegations. The court noted that Mohbad had previously withdrawn a complaint against Naira Marley in October 2022 concerning an alleged assault, indicating that the matter had been amicably resolved. Consequently, the court determined that Naira Marley and the others had no case to answer in this regard.
Reacting to the court’s decision, Naira Marley expressed relief and resilience, stating, “I have been broken but I am not destroyed.” He addressed the public scrutiny and maintained his innocence concerning the allegations surrounding Mohbad’s death.
This series of events has sparked widespread reactions among Nigerians, with many expressing varied opinions on social media platforms.
