Nigeria-Canada Aviation Deal New Code-Sharing Agreement Explained

Boosting Air Travel: How Nigeria and Canada’s Code-Sharing Pact Benefits Passengers

Nigeria and Canada have signed a code-sharing agreement under a new Bilateral Air Service Agreement (BASA), aiming to enhance air connectivity and passenger convenience between the two countries.

The agreement allows airlines from both nations to collaborate on flight operations, enabling them to market and sell seats on each other’s flights. This arrangement facilitates seamless travel for passengers, who can book single tickets that include connecting flights operated by partner airlines, thereby expanding travel options without the need for additional flights.

During the signing ceremony in Abuja on March 21, 2025, Nigeria’s Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, clarified that while this is not a full bilateral agreement, it is a significant step towards strengthening aviation ties between Nigeria and Canada. He noted that Nigeria will designate airline operators to maximize the benefits of this code-sharing arrangement.

The Canadian High Commissioner to Nigeria, Pasquale Salvaggio, highlighted that code-sharing allows an airline to place its designator codes on a flight operated by another airline, offering passengers a seamless journey on one ticket. He expressed Canada’s readiness to work with Nigeria to strengthen bilateral ties, emphasizing that the agreement reflects the deepening relationship between the two nations.
