Putin’s Threat to Ukraine Deal: UK PM Issues Warning
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has issued a stern warning to Russian President Vladimir Putin, asserting that any peace agreement with Ukraine lacking robust security guarantees is likely to be violated by Russia. Addressing military officials from 31 countries at the Northwood military base, Starmer emphasized the necessity of enforcing any ceasefire with substantial international support to deter potential breaches by Russia.
Starmer highlighted historical precedents where agreements without enforcement mechanisms were disregarded by Russia, stating, “We know one thing for certain, which is a deal without anything behind it is something that Putin will breach.”
In light of this, European nations, led by the UK and France, are formulating plans to deploy a peacekeeping force of 10,000 to 30,000 troops to Ukraine to uphold any future peace deal, notably without U.S. military involvement. This initiative reflects a shift in geopolitical dynamics, with European allies taking a more prominent role in supporting Ukraine’s sovereignty and security.
Additionally, UK Defence Secretary John Healey has underscored Britain’s readiness to utilize its nuclear deterrent if necessary, reinforcing the UK’s commitment to European security. He also suggested that France could contribute its nuclear capabilities to NATO’s collective defense strategy, further bolstering deterrence against potential aggressors.
