Akpabio Denies Bribery Accusations in Tinubu’s Rivers State Emergency Voting
Senate President Godswill Akpabio has firmly denied allegations that senators were bribed with $15,000 each to approve the state of emergency declared in Rivers State. These accusations surfaced following reports that senators received $5,000 on Tuesday and an additional $10,000 on Wednesday during Iftar gatherings at Akpabio’s Maitama residence in Abuja.
Akpabio acknowledged hosting senators for Iftar meals but refuted claims of monetary inducements, stating that such reports are orchestrated attempts to blackmail him and other senators.
Supporting Akpabio’s position, Senator Victor Umeh of Anambra Central also denied receiving any bribes, clarifying that while he attended an Iftar gathering at the Senate Guest House, no discussions or payments related to the state of emergency occurred.
These denials come amid President Bola Tinubu’s declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State, citing concerns over pipeline vandalism and political instability. The National Assembly has since approved this declaration.
