Shocking Incident in Maiduguri: Couple’s Arrest for Mango Dispute
The Borno State Police Command has arrested a couple, Mohammed Shettima (33) and his wife, Aishatu Abubakar (23), for allegedly assaulting an 11-year-old schoolgirl, Hauwa Mohammed Goni, in Maiduguri. The incident occurred on March 19, 2025, when Hauwa, a primary five pupil at Bolori Primary School, entered the couple’s residence in the Pompomari area to pluck mangoes. In response, the couple reportedly subjected her to severe flogging, with Aishatu recording and sharing the assault on social media.
The widely circulated video prompted swift action from concerned citizens and civil society organizations, leading to the couple’s arrest with assistance from the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC). The victim has been taken to the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital for medical attention and is reportedly responding to treatment.
The suspects are currently held at the Gender Unit of the State Criminal Investigation Department in Maiduguri, with investigations ongoing before prosecution. The Borno State Police Command has assured the public of a thorough investigation and that the suspects will be prosecuted under relevant sections of the Child Protection Law and the Borno State Penal Code Law.
