Understanding Canada’s Rejection of Over 13,000 Nigerian Asylum Seekers

​Between January 2013 and December 2022, the Canadian government denied refugee protection to approximately 11,921 Nigerian applicants.

During this period, 9,494 Nigerians were granted refugee status. In recent years, Canada has reduced the number of visitor visas issued to countries that are significant sources of asylum seekers, including Nigeria. In 2024, Canada granted 51,828 visitor visas to Nigerians, down from 79,378 in 2023.
