Iceland's Children's Minister Steps Down Amid Controversial Past Relationship

Resignation of Icelandic Minister for Children Over Youth Relationship: Key Details

Iceland’s Minister of Education and Children’s Affairs, Ásthildur Lóa Þórsdóttir, has resigned following revelations about a past relationship with a teenager.

Over 30 years ago, when Þórsdóttir was 22, she had a relationship with a 16-year-old boy, resulting in the birth of a child when she was 23. At that time, Þórsdóttir was a counselor at a church youth group the teenager attended.

In Iceland, while the age of sexual consent is 15, it is illegal for an adult in a mentoring or authoritative position to engage in sexual relations with someone under 18. Þórsdóttir defended herself by stating she was not a leader of the group and that such relationships were not uncommon at the time.

The father of the child, Eiríkur Ásmundsson, has accused Þórsdóttir of preventing him from seeing their son, despite his involvement in the early years and continued child support payments for 18 years.

Þórsdóttir resigned from her ministerial position but continues to serve as a lawmaker for the People’s Party in the coalition government led by Prime Minister Kristrún Frostadóttir.
