Tragic Fuel Tanker Explosion in Niger State: What We Know So Far

On March 23, 2025, a fuel-laden tanker exploded at the A.A Rano filling station in Hannun Riga, Kontagora, the headquarters of Kontagora Local Government Area in Niger State, Nigeria. The incident occurred around 7 p.m. while Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), commonly known as petrol, was being offloaded from the tanker.

The filling station is located a few meters from the ‘B’ Division of the Nigeria Police in Kontagora. The explosion resulted in a fire that engulfed the station, causing significant property damage.

As of now, there is no official confirmation regarding casualties or injuries resulting from the explosion. Emergency response teams have been deployed to the scene to contain the fire and assess the situation. ​

This incident highlights the recurring issue of fuel tanker explosions in Nigeria, often resulting in tragic loss of life and property. In January 2025, a similar incident occurred near Suleja in Niger State, where a fuel tanker explosion led to numerous fatalities.
