
Investigating the Death of Jessica Aber: Former US Attorney Found Dead at 43
Jessica Aber, the former U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia, was found dead at her Alexandria, Virginia, home on March 22, 2025, at the age of 43. Officers from the Alexandria Police Department responded to a call about an unresponsive woman at approximately 9:18 a.m., discovering Aber deceased upon arrival. The cause of her death remains under investigation, with the Virginia medical examiner’s office responsible for determining the official cause and manner.
Aber’s legal career was distinguished by her dedication to public service. She earned her Bachelor of Arts, magna cum laude, from the University of Richmond in 2003 and her Juris Doctor from William & Mary Law School in 2006. She began her career as a law clerk for Magistrate Judge M. Hannah Lauck of the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia from 2006 to 2007. Following a brief tenure as an associate at McGuireWoods, Aber joined the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Virginia in 2009 as an Assistant U.S. Attorney.
From 2015 to 2016, she served as Counsel to the Assistant Attorney General for the Criminal Division of the Department of Justice. In 2021, President Joe Biden appointed her as the U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia, a position she held until her resignation on January 20, 2025, coinciding with the inauguration of President Donald Trump.
Colleagues and officials have expressed profound sorrow over Aber’s passing. Erik Siebert, the current U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia, stated, “We are heartbroken beyond words to learn of the passing of our friend and former colleague, U.S. Attorney Jessica Aber.
She was unmatched as a leader, mentor, and prosecutor, and she is simply irreplaceable as a human being.” Attorney General Pamela Bondi also remarked, “The loss of Jessica Aber, former U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia, is deeply tragic. Our hearts and prayers go out to her family and friends during this profoundly difficult time.”
