Customs Seizes 346 Rare Bird Heads from Wildlife Trafficker

346 Rare Bird Heads Confiscated by Customs Officials

​The Nigerian Customs Service (NCS) has apprehended a suspected wildlife trafficker, Bello Abubakar, at the Mfum/Ekok Joint Border Station in Cross River State. Abubakar was intercepted on March 12, 2025, while attempting to enter Nigeria from Cameroon, carrying 346 rare bird heads and other animal specimens.

The seized items include:​

  • 213 parrot heads​
  • 29 packs of parrot feathers​
  • 128 African hornbill heads
  • 5 eagle heads​
  • 1 pack of eagle feathers​
  • Chimpanzee parts: 2 heads, 4 hands, and 4 legs

Gabriel Ogbonna, the Area Controller for the Cross River/Calabar Free Trade Zone and Akwa Ibom Area Command, stated that Abubakar’s actions violate both international laws and the Nigeria Customs Service Act of 2023, which prohibits unpermitted trade in endangered species. ​
