Greenland Speaks Out: US Officials Face Backlash After Trump’s Bold Claims

Greenland’s leaders have strongly criticized an upcoming visit by a high-profile U.S. delegation, labeling it a “provocation” and indicative of a “lack of respect.” This reaction follows President Donald Trump’s renewed interest in annexing the semi-autonomous Danish territory.

The delegation, led by Usha Vance, wife of Vice President JD Vance, includes National Security Adviser Mike Waltz and Energy Secretary Chris Wright. Their itinerary features a tour of a U.S. military base and attendance at Greenland’s national dogsled race. Outgoing Prime Minister Múte Egede condemned the visit as “highly aggressive,” emphasizing that the caretaker government will not engage with the delegation.

Jens-Frederik Nielsen, leader of the Democrats, echoed this sentiment, criticizing the timing amid Greenland’s political transitions and ongoing coalition talks. He described the visit as disrespectful and a demonstration of power.

Despite the backlash, a White House spokesperson stated that the visit aims to foster partnerships and respect Greenland’s self-determination while promoting economic cooperation. However, President Trump’s continued assertions about acquiring Greenland have drawn widespread disapproval from both Greenlandic and Danish officials. Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen emphasized the need for cooperation based on “the fundamental rules of sovereignty” among the U.S., Denmark, and Greenland.

Public sentiment in Greenland remains largely opposed to becoming part of the U.S., with only 6% support in a recent poll. The visit has heightened tensions and underscored the complexities of international relations involving Greenland’s sovereignty.
