National Assembly Fails to Ratify Rivers Emergency Rule

Tambuwal Confirms Assembly’s Failure on Rivers Emergency Rule

Former Sokoto State Governor and current Senator Aminu Waziri Tambuwal has raised concerns regarding the National Assembly’s approval of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State. Tambuwal asserts that the Senate did not achieve the constitutionally required two-thirds majority for such an approval.

Speaking in Abuja, Tambuwal emphasized that Section 305 of the Nigerian Constitution mandates a two-thirds majority of all members in each chamber of the National Assembly to validate a state of emergency declaration. He questioned whether this threshold was met during the Senate’s deliberations, noting that the approval was conducted via a voice vote, which may not accurately reflect the actual number of supporting senators.

The declaration of emergency rule in Rivers State followed reports of pipeline vandalism and political unrest within the state. President Tinubu’s proclamation led to the suspension of the state governor, deputy governor, and all lawmakers, with a retired vice admiral appointed as caretaker for an initial period of six months.
