Sextortion Scheme in India: Nigerian Man’s Arrest Tied to Doctor’s Tragic Death

A Nigerian national, 31-year-old Djedje Raymond, also known as Chijioke John Okoye, has been arrested in Delhi for allegedly blackmailing a female doctor in Cuttack, Odisha, leading to her suicide on March 1, 2025.

Raymond reportedly contacted the 35-year-old doctor via social media in January, posing as a Delhi-based physician. After gaining her trust, he obtained private photographs during their video interactions. He then threatened to release these images online unless she paid him. Despite her compliance, the extortion continued, causing severe emotional distress. The doctor ultimately took her own life, leaving a suicide note detailing her ordeal and the contact information of the blackmailer.

Following her death, the Cuttack Commissionerate Police launched an investigation, tracing the suspect’s location to Delhi. A special team apprehended Raymond in the Palam area, recovering two passports—one Nigerian and another from Ivory Coast—along with multiple mobile phones and SIM cards. Authorities suspect he had been overstaying in India since 2020 without valid documents.

Deputy Commissioner of Police Khilari Rishikesh Dnyandeo stated that Raymond targeted professionals like doctors by creating fake social media profiles. He would establish contact, gain their trust, and then exploit them through “sextortion.”
