Nigeria's Decline Compared to IBB's Era - Peter Obi

Peter Obi Reflects on Impeachment and Presidential Actions

Peter Obi, former governor of Anambra State and 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party, has criticized President Bola Tinubu’s recent declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State, which led to the suspension of Governor Siminalayi Fubara, his deputy, and the state house of assembly.

Speaking at the 60th birthday colloquium of Emeka Ihedioha, Obi highlighted the contrast between past and present presidential interventions in state governance. He recounted that during his own impeachment attempt in 2006, then-President Olusegun Obasanjo sent emissaries to dissuade the Anambra State House of Assembly from proceeding with the impeachment.

Obi expressed concern that, in contrast, the current president has taken direct action to suspend elected officials in Rivers State, which he views as a troubling development for Nigeria’s democracy.

This statement underscores Obi’s apprehension about the perceived erosion of democratic processes in Nigeria, contrasting previous presidential efforts to uphold democratic institutions with current actions that, in his view, undermine them.
