Senate's Cult-like Nature: Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan Speaks

Natasha Akpoti Faces Recall Petition from Constituents

On March 24, 2025, constituents from Kogi Central Senatorial District submitted a petition to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) seeking the recall of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan. The petition, titled “Constituents’ Petition for the Recall of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan on Grounds of Loss of Confidence,” was delivered to INEC’s headquarters in Abuja and received by the commission’s secretary, Rose Oriaran-Anthony.

The constituents cited a loss of confidence in Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan’s representation, particularly referencing her six-month suspension from the Senate for misconduct following a dispute with Senate President Godswill Akpabio. They emphasized the necessity for active and effective representation in the Senate.

The petitioners claim to have secured signatures from more than half of the registered voters in Kogi Central, asserting that this meets the constitutional requirement for initiating a recall process. They have called on INEC to commence the procedural steps to remove Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan from office and declare her seat vacant.

This development follows a recent ruling by a Federal High Court in Lokoja, which overturned an earlier injunction that had restrained INEC from accepting any recall petitions against Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan.

In response to the petition, INEC has acknowledged receipt and is reportedly deliberating on the next steps in accordance with constitutional provisions and its established guidelines for recall petitions.

The recall process is governed by Section 69 of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended), which outlines the requirements and procedures for recalling a member of the National Assembly.
