Referees Explain VAR Decisions in Italian Cup Matches

Italian Cup: Referees Clarify VAR Decisions for Spectators

In an effort to enhance transparency and fan engagement, Serie A has announced that referees will provide real-time explanations of Video Assistant Referee (VAR) decisions during the upcoming Coppa Italia semi-finals and final. This initiative aims to keep both stadium attendees and television viewers informed about critical officiating decisions.

The implementation will focus on instances where referees conduct on-field reviews prompted by the VAR control room. During these moments, officials will communicate their decisions directly to the audience, clarifying the rationale behind each call. This approach mirrors similar trials conducted in other football leagues and follows practices established in sports like American football and rugby, where officials routinely announce decisions to the crowd.

In addition to the audio explanations, Serie A is introducing “VARDict,” a system designed to display VAR-related information on stadium big screens. Starting from the 30th matchday, fans will be notified when a decision is under VAR review or if a lengthy check is in progress, further enhancing the matchday experience.

Luigi De Siervo, CEO of Lega Serie A, emphasized the league’s commitment to integrating advanced technologies to improve the sport’s transparency and appeal. By adopting these measures, Serie A aims to make officiating decisions more understandable for players, coaches, and fans alike, fostering a more informed and engaged football community.

These initiatives will debut during the Coppa Italia semi-final matches, including the highly anticipated Milan derby between Inter Milan and AC Milan, as well as the Bologna vs. Empoli clash. The final is scheduled for May 14, 2025.

By implementing these changes, Serie A joins a growing list of football leagues seeking to demystify VAR processes and enhance the overall fan experience through improved communication and transparency.
