House of Reps Advances State and LG Police Bills to Second Reading

On March 25, 2025, the Nigerian House of Representatives advanced 39 constitutional amendment bills to their second reading, marking a significant step toward comprehensive reforms in various sectors.

Key Proposals Among the Bills:

  • Establishment of State and Local Government Police: This bill proposes the creation of state and local government police forces to enhance security and address local policing needs.
  • Special Legislative Seats for Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) and Special Interest Groups: Aimed at promoting inclusive governance, this bill seeks to allocate specific legislative seats to PWDs and other marginalized groups.
  • Simultaneous General Elections: This proposal suggests conducting elections for the President, State Governors, National Assembly, State Houses of Assembly, and Local Government Area Councils on the same date, streamlining the electoral process.
  • National Local Government Electoral Commission: The bill aims to establish an independent body responsible for organizing, conducting, and supervising elections for local government offices, ensuring credibility and fairness at the grassroots level.
  • Judicial Reforms: One notable proposal seeks to designate the Court of Appeal as the final appellate court for governorship and legislative election petitions, potentially expediting the resolution of electoral disputes.

Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu, who presided over the session, has referred these bills to the Committee on the Review of the Constitution for further examination. This committee will scrutinize each proposal before they return to the House for additional debate and potential approval.
