UFC Heavyweight’s 5-Year Sentence for Attempted Murder
Former UFC heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez has been sentenced to five years in prison for attempted murder and related charges stemming from a 2022 shooting incident. In February 2022, Velasquez pursued and fired multiple shots at a vehicle carrying Harry Goularte, who was accused of molesting Velasquez’s then four-year-old son. During the 11-mile car chase, Velasquez’s gunfire struck Goularte’s stepfather, Paul Bender, causing non-life-threatening injuries.
Velasquez pleaded no contest to the charges and expressed remorse for his actions, acknowledging the danger posed to innocent people. His defense attorney, Renee Hessling, described the outcome as “bittersweet,” noting that Velasquez has shown courage and taken responsibility. Despite the five-year sentence, it is anticipated that Velasquez may serve only one year, accounting for time already spent in jail and under home confinement.
Goularte, who faces felony child molestation charges, has pleaded not guilty, with his trial scheduled for June 2025.
